X Factor boss Simon Cowell has dismissed competition from new music reality series The Voice, hitting out at the show's coaches.

The rival format, which comes from Big Brother creator John De Mol, has already been a huge success in the States and will air here in the UK in March.

A second series of the show launched in America on Sunday night and was watched by just fewer than 40 million viewers, smashing the ratings for both American Idol and The X Factor USA last year.

But Simon dismissed claims that the show had an advantage because of the mentor's credentials as chart topping performers themselves, rather than music record executives like him.

He said: "I would ask… how many hit records have they made? How many artists have they discovered?"

Meanwhile, Simon admitted to being to blame for X Factor USA failing to live up to his expectations.

"It's only because I opened my big mouth and said we were going to get 20 million [viewers]," he said. "If I hadn't said that, everybody would be saying the show was a huge success."
